plumbing + electrical permit
As of 2026-05-31, heat pump water heater installations in San José require both a plumbing permit and an electrical permit. For single-family and duplex properties, both permits may be applied for in a single session at the SJPermits.org online portal. The installation space typically requires a minimum room size of 10' × 10' × 7' (700 cubic feet) for adequate airflow, or — if the room is smaller — a louvered door with a panel at least 2' × 3'. A condensate drain is typically required. If the existing electrical service is inadequate, a panel upgrade may be required as a prerequisite (see sj-permit-electrical-panel-upgrade). Verify current room-sizing, electrical, and drainage requirements with the Building Division before purchase.
